ABOUT COACH GUYLAINE LACERTE
The Story of my Journey to Health and Personal Growth
I first became interested in health, nutrition, and natural foods when I was a teenager with a desire to become a vegetarian. Although my knowledge about nutrition was, at that time, very limited, I was attracted to the notion of natural foods. I started baking my own whole wheat bread.
In my early twenties I discovered a book that introduced me to the philosophy and science of Natural Hygiene. That book was “Food Combining Made Easy” by Herbert Shelton. It sparked my interest and I began putting the dietary guidelines into practice. I actually began incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables in my diet for the first time in my life! Although at that time I was not suffering from any health problems, nor was I overweight, my energy level was very low. Soon after making the dietary changes, I was pleasantly surprised and pleased to notice an improvement in my health and sense of well-being. Not only was I slimmer, but I also enjoyed a feeling of renewed energy and vigour that I hadn’t experienced before. Ever since that time, when I discovered the benefits of eating with an emphasis on natural foods, I have been engaged in learning and experimenting with a natural foods diet. This interest has stayed with me until today, some thirty years later, and continues to be a force in shaping my lifestyle.
I very much enjoyed experimenting with those new healthy ideas and that led me to experiment with fasting. This I did for a period of twenty-seven days. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life (along with delivering my two babies). At the end of the 27 days when I decided to break the fast and start eating again, it was like being reborn. I found myself in a new body and my senses were acute. Food had never tasted better.
From that time on I made the decision to treat my body in the best possible way and to provide all of the requirements needed for optimum health. I found that if I departed from my healthy diet and ate more cooked foods, or overate, I would get sick. These mistakes were lessons learned. Since then, I have always opted for the natural choice and have not eaten a McDonald’s burger. If I do find myself sick, I rest and don’t eat again until I have recovered from the illness. By resting and fasting, my health is restored once again by getting back on track and finding a healthy balance. I also knew that in the long-term, I was minimizing the chance that I would develop any degenerative diseases.
Over the years, I continued to study about health and nutrition and became knowledgeable regarding these subjects. I became a vegetarian, vegan, and a raw food lover. I tried several variations of a vegetarian diet. Some of these were strict food combining, high fruit diet, a diet void of nuts and seeds, 75% raw food diet, etc.
In the 1990s the raw food movement really started to take shape with the advent of Viktoras Kulvinskas and his raw food and sprouts diet. Inspired by his new raw recipes I began sprouting and my house was transformed into a mini garden where I grew sunflower and buckwheat greens along with wheat grass from which I extracted juice for 5 years.
I felt so much better when I was eating mostly raw foods. I raised my two children (today aged 19 and 16) on a natural vegetarian diet and without vaccinations or antibiotics. They did not experience any of the common childhood diseases.
For the last 12 years I have been experimenting with a predominantly raw vegan diet. To arrive where I am today has meant travelling along a long and winding road in my search for a diet that works well for me, is one in which I don’t experience cravings or dissatisfaction, and that keeps me feeling healthy, young, and energetic. The addition of short intensive exercises in my health program helps to build strength, energy, and stamina.
My quest for health led me to pursue studies in the field and to graduate from the Life Science Institute. I entered into a 6-month internship at TC Fry’s Fasting Retreat where the philosophy of Natural Hygiene was taught and applied. It was a great experience to be involved in supervising people who came to the Retreat with many types of problems and to see how they benefited from this approach to health. The body heals itself when you provide the restful conditions for healing and repair and remove the enervating factors which impair the restorative processes of the body.
Yet further along in my journey in the quest for total health in mind/body/spirit, I started to explore the area of personal development. It is indeed a life-long journey. I attended many workshops in personal growth and even completed two years of training in Gestalt therapy in a group setting. I finally elected to become a professional counsellor so that I could work with individuals in that capacity to help them realize their full potential. In addition, I studied the science of mind and universal laws under the leadership of a minister with Religious Sciences International.
Practicing as a raw lifestyle coach and counsellor allows me to incorporate everything I have learned, experienced, and studied over the years to help women transform their health and their lives. I know what it is like to find peace with one’s own eating habits and lifestyle. I know what it is like to feel unbalanced and to be seeking answers. I also know what it feels like when you start trusting yourself and your intuition, and to become confident in your everyday choices. I know how it feels to be eating healthy foods, to be in control of daily choices, and to feel great as a result. I am a health and wellness coach because I want to help other women feel empowered by experiencing success.
